Facebook recent's updates: What you need to know

If your Facebook is public, you can open your updates to people who aren't your Facebook friends with the 'subscribe' option.

Still trying to figure your way around the new Facebook newsfeed? With every Facebook upgrade, we too have to learn the new tips and tricks to navigate the changes, as well as get a feel for what the upgrades do for us as users. Here are the two big tips we’ve found most useful in understanding how it works:

Set your status privacy. The new ‘Subscribe’ feature lets you choose how much information you want to receive from people and businesses you follow, and the same for people who follow you. Did you know that whenever you update your personal profile status, you can determine who specifically can see the update? It can either be public, friends only or custom. (Remember: even if you decide to post something friends-only doesn’t mean it can’t get back to whomever you’re choosing not to show your update. Rule to live by: once it’s on the Internet, it’s always on the Internet.) Additional tip: If your profile is already private, it will automatically adjust to only update your friends or custom lists.

Unsubscribe. Have a friend or business that you’re tired of seeing in your newsfeed but don’t want to unfollow them completely? Just go to their profile page, select the subscribe button and choose how many updates – and what kind – you want to receive. It’s that easy and quickly makes your newsfeed all the tidier.

We love how these features allow Facebook to get a little more personalized, newsier, and cleaned up a bit. The Subscribe option is definitely one we’re making use of these days to trim the fat and show us only the people and businesses from whom we want updates.
