Momentum Joins Charleston James Island Connector Run “Thank You” Lunch with Mayor Riley

As an active member of the Charleston James Island Connector race committee, our account coordinator Maria Rebula joined her race planning team to host Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., and other Charleston city officials at Halls Chophouse yesterday to extend a special thank you and acknowledge the wonderful support the city gives to the race community each year. At the luncheon, Mayor Riley was presented with a plaque from the Connector Run to honor his service and commitment to the run and it’s cause. Maria has been been an active member of both the run and the foundation since 2011.

The Charleston James Island Connector Run is an annual 5K walk/run and 10K run and bike ride over and back the span of the scenic James Island Connector and is held the first Saturday in November. Proceeds from the race benefit the Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation, a local charity that awards annual scholarships to students with physical disabilities. Since 1999, the Foundation has awarded 61 scholarships to Lowcountry students attending College of Charleston and Charleston Southern UniversityIn the spring of 2003, Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., awarded the Gavalas-Kolanko Foundation a proclamation naming the first Saturday of each November as “Students with Disabilities Day.” Later that year, the Charleston James Island Connector Run evolved into the city’s flagship event marking Students with Disabilities Day and honoring the special students in our area who continue to thrive in the classroom despite their special needs.
