Momentum Marketing Team at Social Media Day

Momentum Marketing’s Julia Melvin Speaks at Charleston’s Social Media Day

Three years ago, Mayor Riley officially recognized June 30th as Social Media Day in Charleston. Each year since, social media experts have come together to celebrate the growth of the industry. Social Media Day 2016, held at the Charleston Museum, added a new element to the festivities—educational panels. Our Social Media Content Manager Julia Melvin provided her expertise in a crisis communications discussion, answering questions about how to handle clients’ accounts during times of emergency in the Lowcountry. The panelists specifically referenced the Emanuel AME church shooting, last October’s flooding, and the Walter Scott case. Some topics included:

  • Should companies address major city events on Facebook and Twitter? If so, how?
  • Should businesses engage in discussions about crises with their followers?
  • How long should a company wait before posting something crisis-related?

These questions were addressed not only by Julia, but also Molly Waring (Director of Media Relations at Explore Charleston), Lauren Mueller (Tourism Marketing Coordinator for the State of South Carolina), Cameron Wolfsen (Communications Coordinator for the City of Charleston), and Natalie Hauff (Media Relations Coordinator for Charleston County Government).

Our team was also excited to attend an informative #SquadGoals discussion that followed the Crisis Communications Panel. We heard from several Charleston bloggers, including Annie Reeves, CHS Food Writer, and The Cocktail Bandits, about their interactions with local companies and events. Jenny Dennis of SKIRT Magazine, Laura Kate Whitney of Charleston Wine + Food, Skelly Stevens of Polished Pig Media, and Ashley Mitchell of Charming Inns weighed in from a business perspective about collaborations with bloggers.

The day ended with a cocktail hour featuring small bites from Tristan, CRU Catering, and B. Gourmet accompanied by beer and wine from ICEBOX.
